Step by step

How to annotate a PDF

  1. Open your PDF

    Open the editor and choose a PDF, or drop it on the page. It opens in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

  2. Choose the Annotate tool

    Choose Annotate. A row of pens appears above the page: highlight, shapes, lines and arrows, freehand, callout and stamps.

  3. Draw on the page

    Drag across the page to make the mark. The colour, width, fill, dash and opacity are in the properties panel.

  4. Adjust it and download

    Click a mark to move it, resize it from its corners or turn it with its rotation handle, then add a comment. Download the PDF when you are done.

    Lay a translucent colour over words, or a line under them.

    Rectangles, rounded rectangles, circles and ellipses, filled or outlined.

  • Lines and arrows

    Lines, arrows and double arrows, solid, dashed or dotted, with the arrowheads you choose.

  • Freehand

    Draw with a pencil, ink or a wide highlighter.

  • Callouts and stamps

    Add a text callout, or stamp a page APPROVED, REJECTED, DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or FINAL.

  • Comments

    Give any mark a comment. Every PDF reader shows it with the mark.

What to expect

  • What you see is what is saved. Each mark is drawn from the same appearance written into the file, so the downloaded PDF looks the way the page did.
  • Undo covers everything. Every mark, move, restyle, comment and deletion is one step to undo, in the same history as your text and image edits.
  • Your name, if you want it. Type your name in the properties panel and it is saved as each new mark's author. It is kept in this browser only.
  • Protected and signed PDFs are respected. A PDF that restricts annotating asks for its permissions password first. A digitally signed one warns you that annotating it will invalidate the signature.

How do I annotate a PDF for free?

Open your PDF in Pandaedits and choose the Annotate tool. Pick a pen above the page, such as Highlight, Rectangle or Arrow, and drag across the page. It is free, with no account to create.

Will other PDF readers show my annotations?

Yes. Each mark is saved as a standard PDF annotation with its own appearance, so other PDF readers show it too, and your comment is saved as the annotation's note.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It stays on your device. Your browser reads it and Pandaedits adds your marks right there.

Can I edit annotations that are already in a PDF?

Usually. Highlights, shapes, lines and drawings already in the file can be selected, moved, restyled or deleted. Marks with custom artwork of their own stay as they are, on the page.
